Support for a State Law Banning Devocalization of Dogs and Cats: Animal Shelters and Rescue Groups, Advocacy Organizations, Pet Training Specialists and Animal Control Officers Speak Out for Animals!
I/Our organization support(s) enactment of a law in our/my state that would prohibit vocal cord surgery performed on a dog or cat by anyone using any means for any reason except to treat a physical illness, disease, injury or birth defect causing the animal medical harm that cannot be relieved by other veterinary care.
Vocal cord surgery for the purpose of altering or removing an animal’s voice, known as devocalization (or debarking, devoicing, bark softening or bark reduction), is an unnecessary and inhumane procedure that subjects dogs and cats to serious, life-threatening risks without any benefit.
This behavior-masking surgery does not ensure animals a home nor prevent convenience-euthanasia. What does? People who select companion animals prudently; provide humane, responsible care, training and supervision; and make a lifetime commitment to them.
